The Mat Room

One room on The Broadway for yoga, mat Pilates, strength and sound. Heated or not depending on the class, up to 20 people, everything you need is already in the room.

What happens in this room

The Mat Room is one room that changes through the week. Yoga most days, mat Pilates both heated and unheated, kettlebell strength on Saturdays, and the slow Sunday classes with live sound. Same floor, same props, a different class every time you walk in.

  • Up to 20 people
  • Heated and unheated classes
  • Mats, blocks, bolsters, straps and kettlebells provided

The classes

Everything in this room is on one membership. Every class carries a full description on the schedule.

The room

Warm underfoot, softly lit, quiet before anyone’s said a word. Mats, blocks, straps, bolsters and kettlebells are all here, so you bring nothing but yourself.

The infrared comes on ahead of the hot classes and warms you rather than the air, so it’s easier to breathe than a traditional hot room. Shoes and phones stay outside.

Taught by teachers worth seeking out

We're careful about who teaches here. It's the part we think about most.

This week in the Mat Room

Our own sequence

The Reset.

If you do one class in the mat room, make it this one. The Reset is our own curated yoga sequence of postures, designed to be accessible, explorative, and inclusive; a balance of movement and stillness, practised in gentle infrared heat.

Infrared warms you from the inside rather than heating the air, so it’s a softer, more breathable heat than a traditional hot room. You’ll work and you’ll sweat, and you’ll also spend a good while lying still. Most people come out slower and quieter than they went in.

No experience needed. It’s the same yoga sequence every time, which is part of why it works.

Yoga in the Mat Room

Yoga is the biggest part of what happens in here, most days of the week. Vinyasa, hatha, yin, restorative, heated and unheated, taught by people with deep training in the traditions rather than a weekend certificate.

There’s a page of its own for it, with the styles explained, what a class is actually like, and the workshops.

New on the timetable

Strength & Mobility

Kettlebells, in groups of eight, on Saturday mornings. Fundamental strength movements like squats, deadlifts and presses, balanced with mobility work for range and stability.

A kettlebell’s weight sits away from the handle, so your grip, shoulders and core have to work to keep it steady. It’s a good match for yoga and Pilates, which build control but rarely ask you to lift anything heavy. Eight places means your teacher can coach everyone’s technique and help you pick the right weight.

Go deeper: workshops

Alongside the timetable we run regular workshops, ninety minutes to two and a half hours, with our own teachers and guests. Pranayama and yoga nidra, sound journeys and kirtan with live musicians, yin intensives, and Hello Handstand for anyone curious about going upside down.

Mat Room questions

I'm a complete beginner, is that OK?

Yes. Every class in here is open to all levels and your teacher gives options through the class. Tell them at the start that it’s your first time.

Is the room heated for every class?

No, only the ones with hot or heated in the name. The infrared comes on ahead of those and warms you rather than the air, so it’s easier to breathe than a traditional hot room.

What's the difference between mat Pilates and reformer?

On the reformer, springs add resistance and also hold you steady. On the mat nothing holds you steady, so your core, hips and shoulders do that job as well. A lot of people find mat harder. Both are on one membership.

I've never lifted a kettlebell, can I come?

Yes. Strength & Mobility coaches the technique first, and you’ll stay on a lighter weight until the movement is right.

How many people are in a class?

Up to 20 for most classes, and eight for Strength & Mobility. If a class is full you can join the waitlist in Momence.

What should I bring?

Yourself. Mats, blocks, straps, bolsters and kettlebells are all here. Clothes you can move in, bare feet or grip socks, and water for anything hot.

Can I bring my baby?

Baby and Me Yoga is on Monday mornings and Baby and Me Pilates on Wednesday mornings, both for babies from birth to around six months. Bring a blanket for them to lie on.

Can I combine this with reformer and recovery?

Yes. One membership covers all three rooms.

Plunge

One roof, one membership

Class, then the plunge.

The Mat Room, the Reformer Room and the Recovery Room are all in the same building, on one membership. Finish a hot class and the sauna and cold plunge are ten steps away. Most people end up doing all three.
